Hip
hop has made its way through different genres. The different sounds have made this
art form worth listening to. Verse Essential joined forces with Switzerland producers
Noyz Beatmaker and Chesko to form the Artform Rejects. Together they showed
their skills by their vivid descriptions over dark eerie beats on their new
anticipated album Blood Written in Ink.
The
production on this album sends a dark eerie feeling to the listener as the
first six songs starts off very solid. “Redemption” starts off leaving chills
down your spine. Tracks like “Prototype” and “Angel of Death” brings you to a
cinematic horror story where Verse reveals his different lyrical content which
well compliments the production to its highest level. Some of the guest
appearances made this album gel together. One of the highlight gems is the
Chesko produced “Battlefield” featuring Dayz da Empora and J-Bux an awesome
collaboration track while producer Beast JVS blessed the eerie Skulls &
Bones beat where Verse goes ham on the track:
However,
there are some slight problems which dwindles the momentum of the album. Tracks
like “The Takeover” featuring Jukstapose and Jason Gorey and the title track didn’t
add too much spark although the beats shined well. The album picked up the pace
at the ending with “Step by Step” where he shared his life experiences: it’s
like I live a double life writing these rhymes/one on this stage, one on my
nine to five…….I never had it easy, niggas ain’t showing me love/cuz I didn’t
show my face enough on EO dub/been shitted on so much I’m immune to the
smell/the world hates me, one more on my record sales. “It Was All a Dream”
shows how you end an album as Verse keeps you in a trance of horror.
Overall,
when I first heard this album I thought it was a hit or miss but after another
listen, this album grew on me; an album worth listening to with slick wordplay
and hard gritty production. Artform Rejects has reintroduced “Blood Written in
Ink” to the sub-genre of horrorcore rap, a branch which emphasizes bloody
horror production and disturbing lyrics. This album is not for everyone so if
you’re looking for storytelling or popping the bottles, this album is not for
you. “Blood Written in Ink” takes it to
the level of Gravediggas and Necro with the 90’s horrorcore sound with a
contemporary twist. This is an album to keep your toes curling and heart racing
as I will break a track by track synopsis.
Redemption:
4 out of 5---starts off dark and eerie, hard beat with tight lyrics. Great
track!
Prototype:
5 out of 5---one of my favorite tracks, the scratches are on point, showed his
lyricism at his best.
Angel
of Death: 5 out of 5--- another tough track; back to that 90’s horror rap feel.
Battlefield
(featuring Dayz Da Empora and J-Bux) 5 out of 5---another favorite track, the
collaboration seems flawless over a rugged beat.
Can’t
Take a Loss 4 out of 5---feeling the kicks on this beat, lyrics are on point
Takeover
(featuring Jason Gorey and Jukstapose) 3.5 out of 5---album filler, feeling the
beat but it didn’t get me out of my seat
Skulls
& Bones 4 out of 5---this is a dark track where Verse shows his morbid
style.
What
We Call It (featuring Fess Gotchu & Access Immortal) 5 out of 5---this is a
hard track, definitely feeling the lyrical chemistry.
Blood
Written in Ink 3.5 out of 5---dark and eerie piano beat but didn’t ignite the
spark.
Jackals
(featuring Sadat X and Godilla) 4 out of 5---dope beat with impressive collabs
from Sadat X and Godilla.
Step
by Step: 4 out of 5---One of my favorite tracks but fit more of a Verse album.
It
Was Only a Dream 5 out of 5---this is how you end an album, this track is tough.
