What’s
the first thing that comes to your mind of the five boroughs of NYC? Street!
This is what you hear from DITC’s affiliate D-Flow of the duo Ghetto Dwellas. He’s
not new to the rap scene; he has been featured in many tracks including Show
and AG’s “Goodfellas” album and the “Full Scale” LP. He has spit flows alongside
Party Arty and builds a strong underground fan base as the group Ghetto Dwellas.
Now he has gone solo with the latest mixtape “Paraphernalia”.
This album already places the nostalgic
90’s feel which keeps the heads nodding to track after track. He starts off
with the first freestyle tracks that show his top notch lyrical side. One thing
about D-Flow is you can’t question his lyrical dexterity: Don’t get it twisted
the kid is a beast/tell em niggas to watch their step like shit in the streets.
That’s the prime example of lyrical flow on “Doe Easy (Freestyle). His original
tracks are stellar as well in which he can hold the mic on his own. He expresses
his street opinion on how to get that cheddar on the Nino Brown’s New Jack City
inspired “The American Way”: I can get it with a stroke of my pen/but the only
way they know is with a tote to your chin. Tracks like “Why Complain” featuring
Gage and Jeff Nortey over a nicely piano beat while “Gotta Survive” featuring Party
Arty and AG demonstrates artist compatibility that fits very well and “You Ain’t
Really That” exposes the frauds that ain’t about that life.
Overall, this album shows no lack of
songs. D. Flow knows how to pick the beats that fit his lyrical flair. The
minor misstep that annoys the new fans is the lack of diversity. However, this
does not destroy the makeup of the mixtape and this is a strictly innovative path
for the streets to listen to. He knows how to make a song and this is a strong
attempt to brand his name and create followers. With producers like Showbiz,
Drawzilla and E. Blaze, who can complain?
