Chicago,
Illinois: a bridge of mixture sounds that has a unique sound with many
different elements. Southside of Chicago has a different sound than the other
parts of Chicago whether it’s southern or northeast underground boom bap
influence. Kayne West and Common introduced their own style which is praised by
many. Now it’s the turn of International Maverick! International Maverick
hailing from Chicago has been putting in major work. His first two single
releases “The Feelin” and “Glory” have made strong reviews on the heavy
rotation. The producer/emcee now takes matters into his own hands with his release
Dreem Katcher.
The intensity of International
Maverick’s rhyming delivery is straightforward: storytelling and clever
wordplay. He expressed that very well with diligence on the track “Dear
Maverick” where he spits about the hustle of independence with lyrics that will
put this track on repeat: my pen bleeds, you can see I’m pouring out my
heart/this is food for thought my ni**a go get your shopping cart. Nuff said on
that knowledge, he straight bodied the self-produced track. His production
skills are original with piano infused tracks like single “The Feeling”, “Love
4 Ya”, and the album title track “Dreem Katcher”. Throughout the album, he
introduces the listener to his world and welcomes with open arms especially on
tracks like “Love 4 Ya”, a heartfelt soliloquy about the females with
uncertainty choices of men on “Say It” and the storytelling track “Black
Diamonds” where the listener paints a mental picture of the street life smartly
narrated with perfection.
Dreem Katcher is an innovative
album that definitely fits the bill with great lyrical cadence and soulful
piano production. What’s impressive on the album is International Maverick
controls the project his way not only by producing the whole album but creates
a candid narrative from his emotions and logic to make this project listenable.
The singing on “Say It” blends the track well with the theme of pain and the
piano beats throughout the majority of the album puts a cool atmosphere ease to
the listener. You can tell that he takes his own independent flair on the
project and it works: I’m on cruise control on my own lane on “Tyson” sums it
all. The final track “I.M.A.V (Same Ole Me) lets you know that what you see is
what you get. The name drop may throw some of the listeners off guard but it’s
not a personal issue; actually this does not weaken the album at all. Overall,
this is a well-balanced album, which International Maverick introduces to the
world of catching your dreams and do it yourself because he has done it.
