Kid Tsunami is a name that not too many people know especially in the States
unless you’re into the underground scene. Hailing from Perth, Australia, Kid
Tsunami is actually not a rookie to the game; he has his hands dirty for quite
some time. He worked with the best of the best and his productions skills are
top notch. So what does Kid Tsunami construct? An album entirely produced by
him called “The Chase”.
The album starts off with consistent
nostalgic drum patterns and samples that fit the focus of the project. One
thing that Kid Tsunami came correct is musical compatibility. For instance
tracks like “AR Toxic” and “Bang” with Chuck Chilla on the guitar has the nice
sound as hip hop underground favorite Sean Price comes correct which is nothing
new and Kool Keith starts off the album with fire lyrical content. “What it Was” is a perfect balance with beats
and rhymes as veteran lyricist J-Live addresses the issue of moving forward
without losing the integrity of the music by stating if you want my old s**t
buy my old album while “Worldwide Connex” brings QB’s legend Craig G spitting
with the ill starting scratches from MC Shan’s sample he is the man that is
known as Craig. “Take It Back” brings the consistency beat elements stated
earlier with the horn samples, wished it was the Artifacts track but El Da
Sensei came correct on this track.
Actually, there is no wack song
throughout the whole album. The Chase brings the nostalgic boom bap consistency
to the project. What’s amazing about The Chase is majority of the album Kid
Tsunami allows his guests to shine on their own. Each track is a solo track
except the title track featuring Buckshot, Pharoahe Monch, Chubb Rock and Jeru
da Damaja where each artist stretched this track ferociously. Kid Tsunami knows
how to place the instrumentals with the artists including the jazzy instrumental
such as “Authentic” and “The First Letter” to adding the heavy drums on “Art of
War” and “These Are The Facts”. It’s refreshing to bring hip hop legends like
Craig G, Masta Ace, KRS-One, Kool G. Rap to name a few to underground favorites
like Sean Price. This is the album strictly for the fans of the boom bap era as
well as the open minded fans. Sounds like a mid-90’s compilation album with a
twist of updated production quality, we will hear a lot from the Australian
beat maker. This is an affinitive album which is highly recommended.
